Commercial Recreation & Facilities Management

Commercial Recreation Curriculum
As a commercial recreation and facility management major, you will need to complete 30 semester hours in the recreation, parks and leisure services curriculum. Coursework includes promoting leisure services, risk management, recreational programming, managing recreational agencies, budgeting for recreation and parks and philosophy of recreation and leisure. Other courses cover topics such as quality service, site planning, facility design, leadership and tourism.

A minor is required in the College of Business Administration. You may choose from a variety of minors including business administration, marketing, management, hospitality services administration, entrepreneurship and small business management, advertising or retailing.

At the completion of your major and minor coursework and other university requirements, you will need to complete a 30-week/30-credit internship that will consist of experience both at an entry-level position and in an administrative professional capacity. With the aid of their advisor, students select their internship site, which can be located internationally.

Before fulfilling the internship requirement, CMU Commercial Recreation students must have 500 hours of volunteer or employed experience in a recreation setting, 100 hours of which must take place in a commercial/private recreation setting. Undergraduate students may earn college credit for supervised field experiences that allow face-to-face leadership opportunities in a recreation setting. Many CMU students are active in professional associations to assist in their growth and development.
